Job Description:


Out client, an international mining house is seeking a Specialised Safety Officer, who will enforce safety in a specialised area such as Construction, Engineering, Surface works, identify and address hazards, and audit compliance. The incumbent will be accountable for ensuring all contractors comply and adhere to safety standards, procedures and processes.


Responsibilities:


  • Conduct site safety inspections
  • Conduct planned and surprise site visits and inspections according to the respective checklist
  • Ensure all required permits and legal documents are in place and valid
  • Observe and ensure everyone is working and behaving safely
  • Stop work and conduct safety training (Coaching) if any unsafe behaviour is detected
  • Maintain the schedule for planned audits
  • Audit compliance with standards, requirements, processes and procedures
  • Identify risk sources using a focused approach, compare against standards and engage management for the corrective actions
  • Ensure audits identify system and control failures to enable corrective and preventative actions from management

  • Classify the impact of incidents according to the impact or damage caused
  • Notify and communicate risks identified
  • Conduct a comprehensive investigation into all incidents
  • Develop remedial actions and communicate mine-wide to prevent further incidents
  • Follow-up to ensure that all remedial actions were closed-out
  • Document incidents and corrective actions on the risk management system as per the legal requirement
  • Display and encourage an appreciation of teamwork and inclusivity
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, build sound relationships and ensure good communications
  • Ensure knowledge and advice is technically accurate and provide stakeholders with relevant information to keep them informed

  • Adhere to the HSE plan for the Business area and take remedial actions where necessary to ensure achievement of Business Unit objectives
  • Actively use Incident Reporting, participate in Planned Task Observation, and comply with any directives from Safety Department
  • Ensure complete, timeous and accurate reporting with appropriate levels of escalation to enable effective decision-making
  • Use systems optimally for data management
  • Ensure feedback and progress reporting to stakeholders
  • Meet Quality Assurance standards and participate in audits


Requirements: Qualification and Skill


  • 3 years relevant experience within a mining/production/construction/engineering safety environment
  • Tertiary qualification or certificate in any of the SHE disciplines or equivalent
  • In-depth working knowledge of all relevant Safety legislation
  • A basic understanding of mining, construction, engineering and process operations
  • Fluency in French, Swahili and English (or at least two of the three) highly advantageous
  • Knowledge of work-related hazards and associated risk
  • Understanding of human behaviour and the impact of cultural differences on human behaviour
