Project Engineer (Process Plant / EPCM / Commissioning / Construction / Greenfield / Mining) – Southern Africa

Job Description:
A client of ours is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of a major project. Reporting to the Project Manager, the successful candidate will coordinate multidisciplinary engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities to ensure safe, timely, and cost-effective project execution. Acting as the Owner's representative, they will manage technical interfaces, oversee engineering deliverables, support procurement and construction activities, coordinate technical queries and project changes, and work closely with internal teams, contractors, consultants, and suppliers to ensure project requirements are successfully delivered from design through to commissioning and handover.
Responsibilities:
- Provide multidisciplinary engineering coordination and technical support to the Project Manager and Owner’s Team.
- Coordinate engineering activities across civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, process and infrastructure disciplines.
- Review engineering designs, drawings, specifications and technical documentation to ensure they meet project and Owner requirements.
- Identify and resolve design gaps, technical issues, interface conflicts and constructability concerns.
- Coordinate engineering activities across process plant, infrastructure, utilities, water, tailings, electrical and other project facilities.
- Support procurement through the preparation and review of technical scopes, specifications, equipment requirements and vendor documentation.
- Participate in technical bid evaluations and manage technical interfaces with vendors, contractors and EPC/EPCM teams.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including site inspections, RFIs, technical queries, design changes and field engineering issues.
- Ensure construction is carried out in accordance with approved designs, specifications and project requirements.
- Support commissioning, mechanical completion, performance testing and final handover to Operations and Maintenance.
- Provide engineering input into project schedules, risk management, changes and technical reporting.
- Promote strong HSE, quality and safety-in-design standards throughout engineering, construction and commissioning.
- Act as a key technical interface between the Owner, contractors, consultants and vendors, driving the timely resolution of technical issues.
- Provide technical recommendations to the Project Manager and escalate significant technical, safety, quality, cost and schedule risks.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical/Process Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Professional Engineer registration, or eligibility for registration with a recognised professional engineering body
- Min 15 years’ relevant engineering and project delivery experience, with significant exposure to mining, mineral processing, infrastructure, or heavy industrial capital projects.
- Proven experience within an EPC, EPCM, or major project environment, with responsibility for coordinating multiple engineering disciplines and contractors.
- Demonstrated involvement across the full project lifecycle, including engineering, procurement, construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, handover, and project close-out.
- Experience delivering greenfield capital projects within the gold mining industry will be advantageous.
- Strong understanding of the interfaces between gold processing plants and non-process infrastructure, including civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, control, and instrumentation systems.
- Practical construction-site experience, including field engineering, resolution of technical queries, contractor coordination, quality inspections, and commissioning support.
- Strong coordination, problem-solving, decision-making, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Experience with commonly used CAD and model-review tools will be advantageous.
